Who hasn’t had a moment when playing poker where we’ve gotten so angry that we’ve essentially given our chips away to the opposition? Infamous online poker professional and member of Team PokerStars, Daniel Negreanu, did not have much luck in episode three of GSN’s “High Stakes Poker.” Negreanu, most known for holding the record as the youngest bracelet winner at the World Series of Poker, lost his $200,000 after an apparent breakdown that forced the online poker pro to throw in the towel.
Negreanu soon lost $151,000 in one hand to Barry Greenstein who held Jack and Ten to Negreanu’s Ace and Eight. The flop revealed Eight, Nine and and Queen. After a round of betting, each player put $5,500 into the pot. An Ace was the turn, causing each player to bet $15,000. The river revealed a king, and the bet was raised to $50,000.
A few hands into the show, Negreanu became involved in a hand that led to the meltdown. With four-way action to the flop, Doyle Brunson held Ace and Nine, Barry Greenstein held a pair of Two’s and Eli Elezra, King and Queen against Negreanu’s Ace and Eight. When the flop was revealed, it showed an Ace, King and Queen on the board, giving Negreanu and Brunson the top pair. This lead Brunson to raise the stakes to $9,000 which Elezra called but Greenstein folded. Negreanu raised the bet to $24,000, Brunson folded and Elezra called. A jack came up on the turn, and a very frustrated Negreanu checked. Elezra bet $35,000, causing Negreanu to fold his winning hand. The commentator said, “Daniel is making a fundamental mistake that I’ve never seen him make before: He’s giving up.”
The same luck ensued for Negreanu, who went broke by the end of the night. Before the show went to credits, Negreanu asked Dwan if he could spare $200,000 to reload.
The son of Romanian immigrants, Negreanu is the youngest to ever win a WSOP bracelet, as 24 years old. He has released a series of books, software, a syndicated column, a blog, an online video diary and an instructional poker video site.
